Before the puck drops:

Few words to describe Hurricanes’ 5-0 loss to Lightning

The Carolina Hurricanes could not score any goals against the Tampa Bay Lightning and were shut out 5-0 in front of a crowd of 17,042 in attendance at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. on Thursday. They put...

---

1st Period

An energetic period of play from both teams as the Hurricanes outshot the Rangers 14-12 and outhit them 13-11.

This one has been a very physical affair right from the start.

At even strength, the Hurricanes have kept the New York defensemen looking over their shoulders as their forecheck has been more agressive than it's been in quite a while.

The man-advantage wasn't productive for either team as Carolina ended 0-2 while New York went 0-for-1 on the power play.

Rangers keeper Henrik Lundqvist made several key saves on shots from forwards Jeff Skinner, Zac Dalpe and defenseman Jay Harrison, to name a few.

Hurricanes netminder Dan Ellis was kept just as busy as Rangers captain Ryan Callahan and Mats Zuccarello had shots stopped to keep this game scoreless aftter one period.

End of Period: Carolina 0, New York 0

---

2nd Period

It took the Rangers only two minutes to finally put the puck past Dan Ellis as Derek Stepan scored a power play goal to break the scoreless game at that point.

Just 31 seconds later, on a botched breakout setup, New York's Callahan picked the puck away from Ellis behind the Carolina net as he bumped with his own defenseman, allowing the Rangers captain to score on an empty net.

Lundqvist continued his dominance in the Rangers net as he continued to stymie the Hurricanes from all angles and no matter how far they shot the puck from.

Leading 2-0, New York was afforded another power play as defenseman Tim Gleason was sent to the penalty box for high sticking.

As a result, Rick Nash beat Ellis from the high slot on a spin-around move after getting the pass from the point and extending the Rangers lead to 3-0 with 8:41 to go in the period.

Any energy that the Hurricanes had from ending the first period, did not return for any consistent period of time throughout the period.

When Carolina did exhibit a few significant bursts of energy with its offense, it was Lundqvist who kept it in check as New York continue to control play for the majority of it, and outshot Carolina 18-14.

End of Period: New York 3, Carolina 0

---

3rd Period

Justin Peters started the period in place of Dan Ellis.

The Hurricanes started the period with much more zip and peppered Lundqvist with numerous shots around the 17-minute mark, but they still couldn't get the puck behind him.

New York's energy level was still high and applied consistantly at both ends of the ice, challenging Peters when they could at even strength and on the power play

Facing the risk of being shut out for two consecutive games, the Hurricanes' Zac Dalpe finally beat Lundqvist high, over his glove hand at 9:27 in.

The play was set up after Eric Staal established possession in the Rangers zone along the boards to the left of Lundqvist where he then slid the puck into the corner where Jeff Skinner looked to find Dalpe open in the slot, for the one-time shot that beats the big goalkeeper.

With less than 10 minutes to play, Carolina had another power play opportunity that resulted in more quality shot attempts on net, but Lundqvist and the Rangers continued to stop the puck from crossing the goal line.

By the end, the Rangers held the Hurricanes off to secure a win after playing a back-to-back while the Hurricanes ended up losing their seventh consecutive game at home.

Final: New York 4, Carolina 1

Hockey Night in Raleigh: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Tampa Bay Lightning

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Tampa Bay Lightning - PKS Consulting LLC

Game Notes:

The Carolina Hurricanes face the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. on Thursday.

The Hurricanes are nursing their wounds during a 1-8-1 run during their last 10 games as the loss of defenseman Joni Pitkanen during a 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Tuesday, has added to the teams physically depleted lineup.

Even while struggling to earn wins, the Hurricanes are still in the hunt for a playoff spot, just four points behind the Southeast Division-leading Winnipeg Jets with three games in hand as well.

The Lightning are only two points behind the Hurricanes as they also continue to join in the chase to catch the  Jets.

Before the puck drops:

---

1st Period

Both teams came out with energy on the forecheck as they played to a scoreless tie after 20 minutes.

The Hurricanes tested newly acquired Tampa Bay goaltender Ben Bishop, a 6-foot-7-inch monster, often with 16 total shots while the Lightning threatened with a more efficient total of nine attempts on Carolina goalie Dan Ellis.

Tampa Bay won 12-of17 faceoffs to lead to their dominance in puck possession in the Carolina zone during the period.

The Lighting got an early power play opportunity after Carolina's Patrick Dwyer was penalized for boarding, but the Hurricanes were able to successfully kill it off while getting a few chances to score a shorthanded goal themselves.

As the period neared an end, he Hurricanes had the best opportunity between the two teams to score as Alexander Semin picked the puck from the Lightning's Dana Tyrell just inside the Carolina blueline and he went the other way with Eric Staal  on a two-on-one sequence into the Tampa Bay zone.

As they completed a pretty tic-tac-toe passing display past defenseman Sami Salo, the play ended with Semin directing the puck into the net and past Bishop.

However, the goal was sent to video review and was subsequently ruled as no goal and that Semin had redirected the puck into the net with his skate, and was unable to get his stick on it.

End of Period: Carolina 0, Tampa Bay 0

---

2nd Period

A tale of two periods - completely different periods.

What started as a scoreless display changed into a three-goal differential in a matter of twenty minutes as the Lightning found the net in the beginning and latter part of the period, to put a strangle hold on the Hurricanes once again.

Teddy Purcell scored just 28 seconds into the period after Matt Carle's point shot was saved by Ellis, but the Lightning forward cleaned up the rebound to put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0.

The Lightning outshot the Hurricanes 13-12 during the period and really controlled play at both ends.

Bishop continued to stymie Carolina's forwards particularly  during a two-man advantage early in the period.

At the other end, the Lightning took a 2-0 lead at the 15:55 mark after Tom Pyatt tipped in an Alex Killorn shot after Tampa Bay won the faceoff back to Eric Brewer who fed Killorn the puck before he put it on net.

The Hurricanes' misery continued into the final minute of play when Martin St. Louis and Steven Stamkos worked the puck back to the right point and Keith Aulie's shot beat Ellis high and under the cross bar to put the Lightning ahead 3-0.

End of Period: Tampa Bay 3, Carolina 0
---

3rd Period

The Lightning continued where they left off as Martin St. Louis finishes a give-n'-go with Benoit Pouliot to extend the lead to 4-0 just 2:24 into the period.

St. Louis picked the puck from Dwyer inside the Hurricanes zone and passed it to Pouliot on the wing who fed it back to the quick winger who let a one-timer from go between the faceoff circles into a wide-open net past a sliding Ellis.

Tampa Bay didn't stop there as St. Louis and Stamkos once again worked the puck to one another before finding Pouliot who extended the lead to 5-0 with 12:30 remaining to play.

Final: Tampa Bay 5, Carolina 0

Hockey Night in Raleigh: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Washington Capitals

---

The Carolina Hurricanes (16-16-2) host the Washington Capitals (16-17-2) at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C. on Tuesday.

Both teams are tied for second place in the NHL's Southeast Division with 34 points apiece, so this will be another crucial game for both teams as they trail the first-place Winnipeg Jets by four points.

Carolina holds an advantage at this point with one game-in-hand on the Capitals and three games-in-hand on the Jets.

However, while the Hurricanes have struggled with a 2-7-1 record over their last 10 games, the Capitals are on the upswing with a 6-3-1 showing during their last 10 outings.

Almost ready for puck drop here.

Period summaries will be provided on the fly from there.

---

1st Period

A good hard-working period for the Hurricanes as they outshot the Capitals 10-4 and were rewarded with two goals both coming from Jiri Tlusty.

Tlusty's goals came at 11:32 into the period on a rebound after Alex Semin's pass from the boards to Washington goaltender Braden Holtby's left was tipped by defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti who jumped into the play.

After Holtby made the save, Tlusty cleaned up the rebound by sliding between the netminders legs to put Carolina ahead 1-0.

On the the power play, Tlusty connected on a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle after new Hurricanes defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron slid him the puck from the point.

The goal put Carolina ahead 2-0, but the Capitals were making several rushes into the Carolina zone that kept goalie Dan Ellis busy throughout the period.

With less than a minute to play, Alex Ovechkin snapped a shot inside the right top post over Ellis' shoulder to bring the Caps to within one goal.

No comfort level for Carolina after twenty minutes.

They still got pushed around more than they should have with some early hits that went unpenalized.

Best evidence of that was Ovechkin catching Jeff Skinner with a high stick to the face in front of Ellis, that all four officials figured didn't warrant a call.

No rebuttal from Carolina didn't help their case as teams have taken shots at them all season.

Not a cause for a brawl, but it's always nice to send a message that you won't be pushed around.

This could be the only element that the Hurricanes have not shown  all season and will be necessary for them to earn a playoff spot.

More action to come soon.

End of Period: Carolina 2, Washington 1

---

2nd Period

Another fast-paced period that generated shots and opportunities from both teams, and with Washington getting better results.

Even while being outshot 14-7, the Capitals scored four goals to Carolina's one.

The Capitals started the scoring in the period just 42 seconds into it as Mike Green's power play goal tied the score 2-2 on a setup from Nicklas Backstrom which set him up to unleash a point shot that beat Ellis.

Tlusty completed his first-ever NHL hat trick just over a minute later at 1:52 scoring the Hurricanes' second power play goal of the night.

The goal was well set up on a play initiated by Semin along the boards to Holtby's right side.

Semin slid a crisp cross-slot pass to Eric Staal who was standing in the opposite corner, and who then found Tlusty wide open on the top of the crease with ample space to put it past a sliding Holtby.

Seemingly in control of the game at the time, turnovers cost the Hurricanes on two different occasions as goals from Green and Ward sandwiched a goal from Ovechkin that put the Capitals ahead 5-3 by the end of the period.

Even while the period maintained a high intensity and tempo from both teams, the game was brought to a complete stop when Hurricanes defenseman Joni Pitkanen crashed into the boards awkwardly while chasing down the puck in his end during  a delayed icing call.

Pitkanen writhed in complete pain after suffering what seemed like a knee/upper leg injury.

After he was carted off the ice on a stretcher, play continued which included the Capitals scoring the final goal of the period from Ward with 45 seconds left on the clock.

End of Period: Washington 5, Carolina 3
---

3rd Period

A hard-fought period as the Hurricanes outshot the Caps 10-8, but with no tangible results or goals.

The team has now only won once in its last ten games, posting a 1-8-1 record while still being only four points behind the Jets and now trailing the Capitals by two points as well.

Final words from coach Kirk Muller:
“Somewhere along the stretch, something’s gotta’ give and some break’s gonna’ happen for us and it will turn us. Usually you get rewarded somewhere. We’re being tested now and I’d call a spade a spade if we didn’t play well, but there’s been a few games lately that we’re not getting points that we deserve better.”

Final: Washington 5, Carolina 3
