NHL Lockout 2012: Prep the ice, drop the puck already

Carolina Hurricanes' Jay Harrison supervises puck pick-up - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting LLC

What a difference a day or two makes.

Just as the excitement of positive developments in Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) talks early in the week gave many fuzzy and warm feelings of watching NHL hockey in the near future, the reality of both the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA) engaging in some serious fisticuffs hit everyone head on.

The high level of hope reached between Tuesday and Wednesday came crashing down hard and fast over the next two days.

Both sides have reached a point that might have wiped the slate clean and to start over - at least that's what the NHL says.

However, too much has been discussed and to much energy has been invested to throw it all away.

The players are ready to play and the fans are ready to watch.

Owners - get the keys out and remove the padlocks!

The time has come to resurface the ice, or install it if it's still not in, and drop the puck.

It's not too late!

NHL, NHLPA working for the weekend

Eric & Jordan Staal - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting LLC
The National Hockey League (NHL) and National Hockey LeaguePlayers’ Association (NHLPA) have put in some long hours in the board room while trying to negotiate a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) this week in New York, N.Y., particularly on Tuesday and Wednesday.

If you could put music to the montage of images showing owners and players going in and out of meeting rooms and lingering in hallways with cell/smart phones attached to their ears, Loverboy’s ‘Workin’ for the Weekend’ would be the suitable selection.

The simple lyrics of the song effects an emotion that many people reluctantly admit makes them crank the volume up to 10 while driving home on a Friday afternoon.

The song creates energy and excitement, and gets many people focused on achieving something – relaxing, partying, even playing hockey

Not only is the song representative of an iconic Canadian hard rock/pop band’s rise to glory during the early to mid-80’s, it seems that it also represents a time of great excitement in the NHL that showcased the Gretzky era in full effect.

They were exciting times indeed.

With the misery that CBA negotiations have laid upon many following them to date possibly ending, and with the thought of a season being salvaged through the positive results of these current meetings, everyone will need the spark to reignite them.

How great would it be to release that energy heading into the weekend knowing that the NHL hockey season will start soon after?

What better way would there be to get ready for that new season, than with Loverboy blaring from all points in North America and beyond?
Everyone's watchin' to see what you will do
Everyone's lookin' at you, oh
Everyone's wonderin' will you come out tonight
Everyone's tryin' to get it right, get it right

A cheesy thought yes, but it is a much better option to consider than to continue to read about endless and unproductive labor negotiations that are about as exciting as watching an ice rink thaw.

Just imagine the thought of this deal getting done, and allowing the players to finally‘work for the weekend with everyone watchin’ to see what they will do.’

It's only Wednesday, but crank it up!

NHL free agency starts with a spark in Raleigh

With blistering temperatures heating up the entire Triangle area, the Carolina Hurricanes recently completed their Prospect Camp at Raleigh Center Ice in Raleigh, N.C.

As free agency opened, there was quite a lot of excitement surrounding the offseason moves that the Hurricanes were ready to make.

The team struck some deals while making unsuccessful bids on others (see Zach Parise and Ryan Suter).

The trade market is the place which the Hurricanes are currently browsing and may reap some new acquisitions in the near future.

Stay tuned.

2011 Carolina Hurricane Red/White - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting LLC
With the Los Angeles Kings finally securing their first Stanley Cup in franchise history and the NHL Awards show making its glitzy appearance in Las Vegas earlier in the week, the NHL season hits it peak and is ready to begin again with the 2012 NHL Entry Draft taking place at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. is upon us.

Many have indicated that this draft could be one of the most unpredictable not only in terms of picks, but deals that could be made by many teams throughout the whole event starting and on Friday night and continuing through Saturday.

This is a view from inside the conference room at PNC Arena, home of the Carolina Hurricanes, on happenings throughout the night and day.

Be prepared for pleasant surprises, excitement, letdown, boredom and an overall appreciation for the initial determination of 700+ young men's professional hockey careers.

Game on!!

As commissioner Gary Bettman started the NHL's 50th Entry Draft to a rousing set of boos, he maintained great concentration to get the show started.

He was off the radar to be sure.

The Wild of Minnesota are next.

Mathew Dumba is a now a part of the Wild.

Carolina Hurricanes are up next at #8.

The Hurricanes make a big trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins!!

They acquire Jordan Staal, brother of captain Eric, for the #8 pick, Brandon Sutter, and Brian Dumoulin.

Next up are the Buffalo Sabres with another pick - they select Zemgus Girgensons from the USHL - first selection from that league so far during the first round.

The calm before the Storm

The whirlwind of activity and excitement that the NHL season provides in every city ended just over a month ago in Raleigh, N.C.

The Carolina Hurricanes put forth a valiant effort to make the playoffs when many predicted that they wouldn't even come close.

Kudos to coach Kirk Muller and 'the boys' to pick it up and play out and ride out the season to the delight of sellouts and near-sellouts at home - in the newly dubbed PNC Arena.

Carolina Hurricanes jerseys as part of NC Sports Hall of Fame induction announcement - Peter Koutroumpis, PKS Consulting, LLC
After hitting turbulent winds early on during the season, and then subsiding slightly to make a crew change, the Hurricanes' ship harnessed the energy around it and sailed at 'full speed ahead'.

Energy was high again, but it was forecast to die back down by early April - which it did.

As the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs are heading into the Conference championship rounds, the awarding of the Stanley Cup will soon follow and so will the 2012 NHL Entry Draft and the league's recognition and awards ceremony.

Just after that, Prospect Camp will follow and not far behind that, Training Camp and the start of the 2012-2013 season.

Or will it? CBA talks will determine how that timeline flows.

Regardless, it is a calm time of the year to enjoy some sun, take care of the yard, golf, run, walk and/or watch  the Carolina Hurricanes' 10-Year Anniversary DVD over and over (for Hurricanes fans only) until all the aforementioned dates and events eventually arrive.

That's when the gusts will create energy that will feed more talk, news and activity coming from and swirling around your favorite NHL team.

That doesn't mean that the energy is not there and work is not getting done right now, but when the time comes, be ready for 'the storm' to pick it back up quickly.

If you're not ready for it, the energy will 'rock you' like it always does in August and September - 'like a hurricane'.

Then it will be time to hold on and hope that the ship you are riding on completes it journey and advances farther than it has recently.

For now, enjoy the calm, but prep your 'Storm' kits accordingly.

  • Justin Faulk gets the first shot on Elliott on the PP but the Blues netminder comes up with a big pad save
  • Second PP unit out for the Hurricanes now - The Finns and LaRose
  • Jay Harrison takes a shot from the point which LaRose gets a stick on but the play is waived off as the whistle blows before the puck crosses over the goal line - 3:19 to go with no score still

  • Some big hits being handed out by Bryan Allen in the Carolina zone

  • Hurricanes miss another opportunity as they have the Blues scrambling around their goal area
  • Ward comes up big with another save as Bryan Allen ties his man up in front of the net
  • Still scoreless with 6:26 left in the period
  • Hurricanes try another trap tactic by not pursuing behind the net and St. Louis obliges by not moving the puck - stalemate hockey at its best
  • Chippy play continues with no calls on either side - a real battle tonight
  • Both sides looking tired after fighting with the puck in the neutral zone
  • Ward comes up with  big glove save as the score is still 0-0 with 2:56 to play
  • With under a minute Jeff Skinner gets hit from behind and then gets knocked down with a high hit in open ice - no call but no one from Carolina enforcing it
  • Hurricanes get penalties on the play  afterwards though
  • Byran Allen sends a 'message' body check to TJ Oshie in open ice  with a few more penalties handed out
At the end of two periods, score still 0-0

3rd period:

  •  Both teams with players still in the penalty box playing 4-on-4 to start period
  • Carolina killing rest of Staal's penalties as St. Louis trying to set up on PP

  • Another PP for the Hurricanes to try to break the scoreless tie
  • Elliott continues to deny the Hurricanes any chances of scoring - four straight saves on the first round of the PP
  • Carolina riding the momentum it has generated and working much harder
  • Pat Dwyer with the breakaway and he beats Elliott but hits the crossbar and it bounces out
  • Still 0-0 with 8:13 remaining as both teams recharge during media timeout
  • Play comes down around the Blues net and Chad LaRose comes around with a bouncing puck that ricochets off a Blue defenseman and over Elliott's shoulder - 1-0 Hurricanes at 12:08 in the period
  • As play continues after the play, Roman Polak takes another shot at Skinner from behind with no call following
  • St. Louis trying hard to even the score and keeping Ward busy
  • Jeff Skinner gets a great pass to score streaking down on Elliott's right but he slows up and take a shot before being ridden out along the boards behind the net by Polak
  • As the Hurricanes pick the puck up in the neutral zone, Staal carries it in and passes Jokinen whose one-time hits Elliott's pads - Carolina still leads 1-0 with 4:36 to play
  •  Skinner brings it in one more time down the wing and looks to pass it to Ruutu
  • As the puck gets tied up in his skates while two Blue defenders slide by, he kicks it forward and beats Elliott - 2-0 Carolina with 2:28 remaining
  • St. Louis still fighting to score on Ward but he will have nothing to do with it - still 2-0
  • With less than a minute to play Kevin Shattenkirk gets a high-sticking double-minor
  • As time runs down, Hurricanes win in their new arena
Final score - Carolina 2, St. Louis 0
