2013 NHL Entry Draft presents many possibilities

It wouldn't be surprising if the Carolina Hurricanes along with every other team in the National Hockey League have drawn up more contingency plans than they ever have for the upcoming 2013 NHL Entry Draft that will take place in Newark, N.J. on Sunday.

Sitting with the fifth overall pick, Carolina sits far enough down that depending on how Colorado, Florida, Tampa Bay and Nashville make their selections, they could end up getting a gift of a pick without ever planning on it, or at least only as part of the long shot plan that they've kept at the bottom of the pile.

No doubt the drama that this year's crop of young talent, that has been identified as 'deep', has presented has kept teams busy formulating and finalizing their strategy since the end of the regular season and even before then.

Depending on what happens on Sunday, new plans may be drawn up as a result of the buzz and talk that is growing daily.

Not to be forgotten is the quiet period that has occurred leading up to the draft, devoid of rampant trades and re-signings, even as the free agency signing deadline approaches a week later than in years past.

Though June 30th usually presents the time for all NHL clubs to empty the purse strings with free agent signings after making their investment in their youth corps on draft day, this year's 'selection Sunday' may actually involve an electric, one-stop shopping affair that will have heads spinning.

It's a buyer's market that is full of inventory and the flea market mentality of roaming the tables to not only talk of trading picks, but veteran players as well, can make any hockey executive and fan equally excited of the possibilities that exist to make their team better.

Hang on, this could be the most exciting NHL draft day held to date.

Jon Chase, Carolina Hurricanes Director of Community Relations and Promotions, announced on Wednesday details for the team’s upcoming 2013 NHL Entry Draft Party to be held at Rudino’s Sports Corner on Sun., June 30.

The event will begin at 2:30 p.m., with televised draft coverage starting at 3 p.m. on the NBC Sports Network.

The Hurricanes hold the fifth pick in the draft’s first round, and four other picks in rounds 2-7, and unlike in previous years, the entire seven-round draft will take place on one day.

Wesgarth to be on hand

Hurricanes forward Kevin Westgarth will make an appearance at the Draft Party to interact with fans and team personality Ron the Ref will serve as emcee.

Hurricanes Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator and 2001 NHL All-Rookie Team member Shane Willis will also be on hand to offer insight into the draft process and to comment on this draft’s top players, including Carolina’s selection.

As the team has done in the past, there will be games, raffles and contests throughout the Draft Party, including the annual Draft Challenge, where one fan will win a new Hurricanes jersey.

Team mascot Stormy and members of the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad will also be in attendance, and fans will have a chance to see the team’s new jerseys up close, and sign up to win raffle prizes that will include autographed items and rare memorabilia and items from The Eye team store.

Last year, fans watched as the Hurricanes packaged the eighth overall pick in a trade to acquire center Jordan Staal.

In 2010, those gathered watched as eventual 2010-11 Calder Trophy winner Jeff Skinner was selected seventh overall, and in 2011 fans saw the team select defenseman Ryan Murphy who will play his first full professional season in 2013-14.

Rudino’s Sports Corner is located in the Olde Raleigh Village shopping center, at 3101 Edwards Mill Rd., at the corner of Edwards Mill and Duraleigh Roads.
